Lost Time for Child Care

Findings in narrative and slide format include:

The percentage of all soldiers reporting having dependent children has remained stable since spring 1995 (1995 - 51%; 1999 - 51%; 2002 - 49%).

Of those who use child care and have dependent children 12 years or younger living with them,

  • over one-fifth (22%) of officers and one-fourth (27%) of enlisted personnel lost time during the last 3 months from military duties because of the lack of child care.

  • almost two-fifths (38%) of the spouses of both officers and enlisted personnel lost time during the last 3 months from paid or volunteer work because of the lack of child care.
