TIME LOST BY SOLDIERS AND BY THEIR SPOUSES FROM MILITARY DUTIES/WORK/ VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES BECAUSE OF YOUTH BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS

The attached findings in narrative and slide formats from the Fall 1997 Sample Survey of Military Personnel contain officer and enlisted data on time lost from duty/work/volunteer activities because of  youth behavior problems.  Findings include:

  • Parents with 13 to 18 year old youth living with them constitute 10.9 % of all Active Component soldiers.  About one-sixth of officers (16.5%) and one-tenth (10.9%) of all enlisted personnel have a youth between the ages of 13 and 18 living with them.

  • Of those with dependent youth in this age group, slightly more than one-sixth of soldiers (18.4%) and their spouses (18.2%) reported losing time during the last 12 months because they had "to deal with youth behavior problems (e.g., school suspensions, vandalism, alcohol or drug abuse, teen pregnancy, or other misconduct").

  • There were no statistically significant differences between rank groups, racial/ethnic groups or education levels for time lost by soldiers and their spouses due to a youth behavior problem.
