A small community theater based in a converted World War II stable in Germany proudly displays Thirteen Topper Awards— the U.S. Army's “Oscar” for entertainment productions— awarded for a single production of "Little Women” in 2007. Unfortunately, once outside the door of this thriving theater (they were nominated for 22 Toppers and won five in 2009), their accomplishments, and more importantly, the quality entertainment they offer to their garrison and the surrounding community, are not as well known.

This year, the U.S. Army reported the highest number of suicides among its Soldiers since it began tracking the rate 28 years ago, according to the Army Safety Office. Added to the record number of suicides, there are alarming accident statistics involving Soldiers within a year of returning from deployment. With 30,000 more troops going to Afghanistan— more deployments, more casualties and more Soldiers coming home with wounds even their commanders don’t understand very well— evaluating post-combat stress and reintegration has become more important than ever.
