Labor Day Message

On Monday, 6 September, we will celebrate Labor Day, a holiday that pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers whose hard work ensures the success of our great nation.  This three-day weekend (4 - 6 Sep 10) also marks the unofficial end of our summer period.  Soldiers, Family members and Civilians will participate in many outdoor activities.

To minimize the risk of accidents, Soldiers, Civilians, and Family members should be alert to their surroundings and exercise good safety practices in all activities. Employees are reminded to apply safety principles and common sense safety practices to all planned sports and recreational activities. Sports and recreational activities are two of the leading sources of injuries.  While there are inherent risks associated with such activities, risks can be minimized by a proper warm up, use of correct equipment, sufficient hydration, avoiding over-exertion and proper stretching after the activity is complete.

FMWRC personnel should take into consideration that travel times increase significantly during holiday weekends. Information regarding delays and closing are available through local media outlets. Safety Excessive speed, fatigue, alcohol, non-use of helmets/motorcycle safety gear, and driver distractions are the most common causes of injury and death in motor vehicle accidents.

*****Employees travelling to ocean front destinations on the east coast should pay close attention to information on Hurricane Earl.  Current tracking by the National Hurricane Center does not anticipate landfall on the east coast although the rip currents are expected to be strong over the Labor Day weekend.  Warnings regarding rip currents are posted at local beaches and through local media outlets.*****

Remember our Soldiers, Civilians and Family members who continue to serve.  We ask you to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Linda and I extend our deepest gratitude to you for your service and dedication to Soldiers and Families.  I am proud to serve alongside every one of you as part of this great team. Enjoy the Labor Day Holiday with safety in the forefront of your minds.

Finally enjoy your 59 minutes on Friday!  HOOAH.

I encourage all members of the Installation Management Community to enjoy

the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend with appropriate planning and

awareness for the unexpected.

All recreation activities whether they be boating, swimming, motorcycle

riding, grilling, camping or hiking pose risks.  Do your part to avoid

falling victim to the hazards. The brochure at

http://www.imcom.army.mil/hq/officecom/staff/safety/ has valuable

information.

Privately owned weapon accidents are increasing.  Look at this interactive

site for new safety techniques (https://safety.army.mil/Firearm-Safety).

Never get behind the wheel of a vehicle or a boat after drinking nor ride

with someone who has been drinking. Follow the rules of the road.  If you

ride motorcycles, wear personal protective equipment.  Make everyone use

seat belts every time. Use TRiPS (https://crc.army.mil) and apply Composite

Risk Management to your planning.

With the start of a new school year, more children are on the streets. Less

day light means poorer visibility.  Stay alert and watch for children

standing along the street, exiting from a bus, walking or riding a bike.

Sarah and I hope you enjoy your holiday without taking unnecessary risks.

You are the last line of defense against a mishap at work, at home, and at

play.  Look out for other members of our Army team -- Soldiers, Civilians,

and their Families.  Together, we can save lives!

Thanks for all you do.  Take care.  D6

Military and civilian personnel must be vigilant in order to protect
their own safety while commuting to and from the office and while on travel orders.
