INCLUSIVE RECREATION AND ADAPTED SPORTS
Our mission is to provide Soldiers and Families with recreation and leisure activities that present no physical or mental barriers. IMCOM G9, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) encourages Soldiers and Families to stay active and to explore new recreation and leisure pursuits to improve their quality of life and to support their physical and social needs.
Inclusion is a philosophy that embraces every member of the community, no matter the disability, and enables individuals to be a part of a community where basic values are important to each member, not just some; and where people have their needs met without restrictions or limitations. Adapted Sports and Recreation are geared to maximize the health and exercise benefits of physical activity. FMWR offers a variety of recreation, sporting and quality of life programming for people with disabilities. These opportunities include structured classes, fitness rooms, full court gyms, pools and tennis courts.
U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Paralympic Military Program
The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Paralympic Military Program provides post-rehabilitation support and mentoring to American servicemen and women who've sustained physical injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, visual impairment/blindness and stroke. Active Duty service members and Veterans are introduced to adaptive sport techniques and opportunities through clinics and camps and are also connected with ongoing Paralympic sports programs in their hometowns.
Through partnerships with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, the USOC Paralympic Military Program has impacted the lives of thousands of injured military personnel. Sports participation rates at Warrior Transition Units, Wounded Warrior Battalions/Detachments and other Wounded Warrior programs throughout the U.S. have increased from over the years.
U.S. Paralympics is working in collaboration with leadership from the United States Army Warrior Transition Units (WTU) and Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) to develop adaptive sports and fitness programs for injured personnel serving in these units. Ongoing programs are designed to enhance a service member's rehabilitation, improve their physical fitness and generally improve their quality of life.
These programs focus on getting the soldiers back into a healthy, active lifestyle with a number of activities being offered multiple days per week at each installation. Activities can include basketball, swimming, sitting volleyball, spinning, archery, walking/running and strength and conditioning.
