INCLUSIVE RECREATION AND ADAPTED SPORTS
Our Goal is to ensure Family and MWR patrons have access to services they want and need by offering a broad spectrum of programs, including Outdoor Recreation, Sports, Fitness and Aquatics, Automotive Skills, Recreation Centers and Arts & Crafts.
The three basic ways Family and MWR modifies programs to be functional for all participants is:
- Many existing activities provide opportunity for participation for persons with disability that requires little or no modification. Example: swimming, riding, table tennis, bowling, martial arts, archery, arts and crafts, etc.
- Some sports have been specifically developed to provide opportunity for participation. Example: Goal ball, Murder ball, etc.
- Attitudinal barriers in existing and future recreation services can be minimized or even removed through training and education. Family and MWR staff is eligible to receive training in inclusive recreation, program planning, adaptive equipment, and variability in program rules and policies through a number of resources (see below).
- Some existing sports have been modified (adapted rules or equipment) to provide opportunity for participation. Example: wheelchair basketball, track and field events, weight lifting, sit volleyball, etc.
Penn State: Inclusive Recreation for Wounded Warriors offers a four-day course designed to train assistant managers, managers, recreation division chiefs and other support personnel in Family and MWR. The purpose of the course is to instruct FMWR staff on methods for integrating wounded military personnel into existing Family and MWR programs and services through appropriate adaptations and modifications. The course, aimed at recreation personnel across all branches of the service, increases understanding of the characteristics of various physical and psychological conditions resulting from war. These conditions include but are not limited to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), amputations, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
