Army Entertainment

Entertainment for the Soldier, by the Soldier" has been a part of the U.S. Army's heritage since 1774. Building on the tradition of Civil War camp shows, and more known military shows "Yip Yip Yaphank" during World War I and "This Is The Army" during World War II written and directed by then SGT Irving Berlin, Army Entertainment was formalized to inspire, support and coordinate theatrical and musical programs at Army installations worldwide.
Army Entertainment is a U.S. Army Installation Management Command operation and is the official agency for producing and delivering diverse musical, unit entertainment activities, special events, touring shows, talent competitions and theater entertainment to Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Retirees at home and abroad. In addition to improving the morale of service members at home and in the field, Army Entertainment performances overseas provide a unique opportunity to help secure strategic bonds between our nation and our allies.

Army Entertainment relocated in 2011 from Fort Belvoir, VA to Fort Sam Houston as part of the Army's Base Realignment and Closure. Today, the Army's second-oldest movie theater, the historic Fort Sam Houston Theater, built in the 1930's, is home base for Army Entertainment operations and the Army Entertainment Detachment.

The U.S. Army Soldier Show and Operation Rising Star are cancelled for the 2016 season due to reductions in budget and troop strength. To win in a complex world, the Army must focus all available resources on readiness. It is prudent in these times to ensure all Soldiers focus on their primary mission, and any resources saved are allocated to enable readiness for a self-reliant and globally-responsive All Volunteer Army.
