Festival Mission and History

    The US Army IMCOM Europe Entertainment One Act/One Page Play Festivals and Theatre Skills Workshops have been held annually on Columbus Day Weekend since 1995.

    The mission of the Festival is to encourage individual and group excellence and participation throughout the Army and US Forces Europe community theatre programs.

    Importantly, the festivals and the Entertainment program enhance Soldiers' and their Family Members' resiliency and readiness by:

  • providing educational opportunities to enhance life skills;
  • offering positive and supportive recreational activities and events;
  • offering them a "home away from home" and a sense of family.

    The weekend is full of free theater skills workshops presented by professional theater artists; a monologue competition; an improvisation evening and guest shows from International Theaters.

     On even numbered years, the IMCOM Festival is an American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) One Act Play Festival. The show named "Best Play" is the AACT Region X nomination to the National Festival held the following summer.

     On odd numbered years, IMCOM Entertainment presents a One Page Play Festival and Theatre Skills Workshops.

     The festivals are open to all US military personnel, family members and DoD Civilians stationed overseas and their bona fide guests. All events and performances are free to the general public.

     See the links on the previous page for past festivals.

Participants must have a monologue memorized and prepared with a hard copy. Individual coaching sessions will be scheduled throughout the day on Saturday. Presented by Paul Bourne, director of the Menagerie Theatre Company, Cambridge, UK. Open to 13 years and up.

#2 - Armed Combat.  (15 yrs. & up)
These workshops will present methods of armed and unarmed combat to create realistic fight scenes and violence for the stage without anyone getting hurt. Presented by professional fight choreographer, Dörte Jensen. Students should wear clothing appropriate for exercising: no restrictive clothes, no heels, no flip-flops, no skirts or dresses. Open to ages 12 years and older. Sunday, Oct. 7, 1415 -1530 hrs at the KCAC on Daenner Kaserne.

The Reality of Doing. A Sanford Meisner Acting Technique Workshop: This workshop is a crash course in basic Meisner principles, all focused toward generating truthful behavior under imaginary circumstances.  Meisner said "The most difficult thing to learn is the art of simplicity," which echoes Stanislavski's cautionary "The simpler the truth the longer it takes to arrive at it."  The Meisner technique challenges the actor, emotionally and imaginatively while engaging incredible creativity and confidence.  Presented by Guest Artist and Adjudicator, David Barker. Open to ages 18 years and older. Saturday, Oct. 6, 0800-0915 hrs at at the KCAC on Daenner Kaserne.

Kipnis Mime Technique Workshop:  White-face or not, mime is a basic and important tool EVERY actor should possess. This pantomime workshop will focus on techniques developed by Claude Kipnis (1939-1981)  who studied with Marcel Marceau and founded his own company in 1968. Students should wear clothing appropriate for exercising: no restrictive clothes, no heels, no flip-flops, no skirts or dresses. Presented by Guest Artist and Adjudicator, David Barker. Open to ages 12 years and older. Saturday, Oct. 6, 1045-1200 hrs at at the KCAC on Daenner Kaserne.

Let there be Light! Demonstration: A presentation of the latest in theatre lighting equipment and techniques. See the newest developments and the most effective ways to use them for dramatic lighting in any size house. Presented by the ETC Lighting firm. Sunday, Oct. 7, 0900-1000 hrs at KMC Onstage.

Successful Auditioning Workshop: Auditioning can be a daunting prospect. How do you know what the director is looking for? How do I know what part to audition for? What is the difference between a monologue and a "cold read" audition? This workshop will teach auditioning techniques to land the roles you want and show you how to put your best foot forward. Presented by Adjudicator, Ron Ziegler. Open to ages 12 years and older. Sunday, Oct. 7, 0900-1000 hrs at the KCAC on Daenner Kaserne.

Empowering Actors, Elevating Artistry, Enlivening the Ensemble!: It is a universal challenge to directors - How to keep a show's ensemble or chorus enaged. It is also a challenge for actors in the ensemble to remember they are not "just a small part" or part of the scenery. There are reasons why actors in the ensemble are disengaged and (Good News!) there's something to be done about it. This workshop will provide directors new techniques other than "herding cats" and shows performers the power they have to help tell the story and the artistry to do it in a meaningful way. Presented by adjudicator, Kathy Pingel. Open to ages 12 years and up. Sunday, Oct. 7, 1015 -1115 hrs at the KCAC on Daenner Kaserne.

Showcase Presentation - "Dodging Bullets"

Dodging Bullets Poster #2.jpg      The 2018 Guest Showcase production will be the critically-acclaimed, one-man show,"Dodging Bullets"

      "Dodging Bullets" will be presented at 4:00 pm, Sunday, Oct. 7 at KMC Onstage, Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern. The performance free and seating is open.

      PLEASE NOTE: Due to adult language and mature themes, this production may not be appropriate for all audiences. It is recommended for MATURE audiences.

 The Story Of "Dodging Bullets"

      On his sabbatical leave during the summer of 2004, David Barker was up against an artistic block.  He needed to develop a new solo show that was personal and biographical.  But with life approaching 50 years where no major catastrophe or particularly unusual event had ever occurred, he had nothing to write about.  Barker, a theater professor at Arizona State University who is known for his solo mime performances, didn’t have to scratch his head too long for subject matter.  Two bullets, fired in rapid succession, changed everything.

     One of the bullets was aimed at him, and astonishingly, it missed. His sister was not as fortunate, because the second bullet – meant for her – hit her in the chest.

     The story of how his brother-in-law, “Dr. Jack,” happened to open fire on him and his sister became Barker’s sabbatical project – a one-man play titled Dodging Bullets.

     The play follows three story lines – Dr. Jack’s attack on his wife and Barker; Barker’s father’s emergency surgery and declining health; and Barker’s mother’s dementia.  Dr. Jack, a semi-retired, successful East Coast brain surgeon, had been abusing his wife for many years, and his wife finally moved out.
On the fateful day of the attack, Barker accompanied his sister and 15-year-old niece on a stop at the sister’s home to pick up asthma medication for his niece.

     “I went along to protect my sister,” Barker said. “We approached the house and Dr. Jack appeared at the front door and ordered me to leave. Dr. Jack is a high-strung control freak, so when I refused to leave he attacked me.  We grappled briefly and he ran back into the house. My sister, niece and I were in complete shock. He came back with a gun and began to fire.”

     The rest of the story is a dramatist’s dream, a soap opera come true. The SWAT team arrives, snipers are placed on the roofs of the houses across the street, and Dr. Jack stays holed up for four hours, but finally turns himself in and is booked into the county jail.  Dr. Jack’s sister bails him out, but he is arrested again for trying to buy a handgun and spends the next 10 months in federal prison.  Shortly after his release he marries an Episcopal priest but he still had not faced his attempted murder indictments.

     “It’s invigorating to perform this show because everything actually happened. I’m not performing about imaginary circumstances as I usually do” said Barker, who also works as an actor and fight choreographer.  He knew early on that the traumatic experience would make for vivid storytelling.  "My sister was approached by Maury Povich and 'The Montel Williams Show,' but she declined," he says. "She said she was holding out for 'Oprah.' "

     David Barker plays 10 different roles including his mother in this compelling drama.  Dodging Bullets includes mature themes and may not be appropriate for all audiences.
