Remain Financially Ready During the Holiday Season

The holiday season brings joy and celebration, but it can also create unexpected financial pressure, especially for single Soldiers, who manage their household budgets independently. Staying financially ready starts with mindful planning.

Soldiers can start by creating a realistic holiday budget that accounts for gifts, travel, meals and social events. They can also track every purchase to stay within their limits, because small holiday expenses can add up quickly.

Soldiers can strengthen their financial readiness by prioritizing needs over wants. Before purchasing gifts, they can consider practical alternatives such as handmade items, meaningful experiences or group gift exchanges that help reduce costs. They can also look for holiday sales, military discounts and early travel deals to stretch their money further.

Most importantly, Soldiers can take advantage of the Army Financial Readiness Program, which provides free tools and support to help them stay financially secure. Through this program, Soldiers can meet with accredited financial counselors who offer guidance on budgeting, credit management, savings plans, debt reduction and major financial decisions. Classes and workshops are also available throughout the year to help Soldiers build long-term financial confidence. Whether they need help creating a holiday spending plan or want to strengthen their overall financial habits, these resources are designed to support financial well-being.

Soldiers should avoid relying on credit cards or high-interest loans during the holiday season. Instead, they can consider using a cash-only approach or creating a small holiday savings fund. By planning ahead, using installation resources and making intentional choices, single Soldiers can enjoy the holiday season while protecting their long-term financial health and readiness.
